はじめに Introduction

長岡技術科学大学・雪氷工学研究室は、雪国の雪氷災害の分析やその対策、雪や氷の利用技術の開発などに幅広く取り組んでいます。
"Snow and Ice Engineering Laboratory" of Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT), is working extensively on Snow and/or Ice disaster analysis and countermeasures in snowy countries, and development of snow and ice utilization technology.

日本の半分は雪国です。しかも、毎年豪雪に見舞われる地域に何万人もの人が住んでいる都市がいくつもあるのは世界で日本だけです。
Half of Japan is a snowy region. Moreover, Japan is the only country in the world that has tens of millions of people living in areas that are hit by heavy snowfall every year.
そして長岡技術科学大学は、全国の86の国立大学のうち、唯一特別豪雪地帯に本拠地を置いています。そのため、雪氷工学研究室では、豪雪と折り合いをつけながら安全に暮らす技術の開発や、積極的に雪や氷を活用する技術の開発に取組んでいます。
NUT is the only one of the 86 national universities in Japan located in the special heavy snowfall area. For this reason, the Snow and Ice Engineering Laboratory is working on the development of technologies that allow people to live safely while confronting heavy snow, and the development of technologies that actively utilize snow and ice.
